How I work
Understanding the problem before prescribing the answer
“More than anything else, I enjoy helping people improve their lot.”
Organisations are complex things. There are competing pressures, different perspectives and a lot of moving parts. Over the years I have learnt that the best solution is not always the obvious one.
I ask difficult questions and keep pushing until I understand what an organisation is really like, not simply what its structures, plans or presentations suggest it is like. Its operating reality matters.
I would rather turn down an assignment than take on work that has not been properly thought through. If the problem is wrong, the brief is wrong or the organisation is not ready to act on what we find, an elegant piece of consultancy will not produce the result anyone actually wants.
What matters to me is being useful to the client: bringing judgement, curiosity and a kind, human approach, and doing work that leads to something better after I have gone.
Upcoming book
Andrew’s forthcoming book
A field guide to the strange world of organisations.
Andrew is currently developing a forthcoming book: a practical and wry field guide to the strange truths, illogical behaviours and flawed beliefs that shape organisational life.
The book explores the questions many people quietly carry around at work: why meetings multiply, why appraisals disappoint, why change so often fails, why good people stop giving their best, and why organisations so often behave differently from the values they display.
It brings together decades of consulting experience, lived organisational stories and practical insight for leaders, managers and anyone who has ever sat in a meeting wondering why on earth organisations work the way they do.
“Most people are taught how to get a job, but not how organisations really work.”
The book is currently in development. Selected ideas and observations will appear first in Articles & Field Notes.

The first conversation explores your context, what may be happening beneath the surface, and whether the right next step is leadership development, team development, change support, senior selection insight or a focused diagnostic review.
